In the previous module, we took a laser focus to the issue of addictive thinking and relapse—and for good reason! It’s important to take the time to gain better control over our emotional reactions to stressful life events, and to see how relapse is actually a step-by-step sequence that we can intervene in and reverse at any time.

On the other hand, recovery is about so much more than the mental choice of whether or not to use drugs or alcohol. In this module, we’re going to crack open that “so much more” part. Some of the following lessons will focus on how to repair the damage and pain people have experienced when they were addicted or when they knew someone who was addicted. In other lessons we’ll focus on taking proactive steps toward leading a conscious, goal-oriented, and fulfilling life in which the triggers and “escape hatches” of substance use no longer hold sway over our thoughts and behaviors.
